ABOUT JAVIPEE
Javi Perez has been creating with his hands since the beginning. He was either braiding hair, making replicas of Gumby with Play-Doh, or drawing his classmates on the margins of his science book. The art aisle at Toys R Us was his Mecca and those kits, books, and paints became his teachers. He has never taken an art class or been taught how to make stuff; he was, however, met with incredible support from his parents, family and friends to pursue painting because it felt special. Special to be good at making something out of nothing, especially without conventional tools. He just made them up. Javi attributes that abandon of technique to his signature style. With a BFA in theater, Javi is an observer. An observer of personal details and behavior that eventually make his subjects interesting to look at. He pays attention not only to their presentation of self, but rather how they feel about it all. His portraits are not serious nor should they be seen as such. They are silly, fun and colorful and looking too deep into their meaning might make you gay.
